What Happens If A Saline Implant Ruptures?

Breast implant rupture is often one of the top concerns for patients considering breast augmentation. It can occur with both saline and silicone implants. Though it is much less common in silicone implants, if it does happen with silicone implants, can be a greater cause for concern. So, what happens if a saline implant ruptures?

During surgery, saline breast implants are placed empty and then filled to the desired amount. The outside of the implant–just like silicone implants–is made of soft silicone. Saline breast implants do have a higher rate of rupture than silicone, though it is more likely to occur with older implants. However, trauma to the chest can also contribute to rupture.

While ruptures, in general, are quite rare, if a saline implant ruptures, it is likely that you will know right away. The saline will begin to drain out of the implant. It is not harmful for your body, but it will result in the affected implant deflating, thus, reducing the size of the breast. It may cause pain or tenderness but often comes with no symptoms other than deflation.

Once identified, a ruptured saline implant is then replaced or removed altogether. To learn more and schedule a consultation, call us at 425-576-1700. You can also reach out online via Price Simulator, chat, or contact form.
