BOTOX, as we know it today, was first isolated in the 1970s. Scientists studied Botulinum toxin for years beforehand, but the medical uses were heavily researched during the mid-to-late 20th century. The FDA approved BOTOX for the treatment of strabismus in 1989. Doctors performing the treatment and patients receiving it noticed that BOTOX smoothed the look of glabellar lines.
