Sun spots, wrinkles, and textural changes are known effects of sun damaged skin. But, did you know that during the summer months you are especially vulnerable to damaging the delicate skin around your eyes? Strong ultraviolet rays and our tendency to squint in the bright sunshine can make us extremely susceptible to eye-aging such as the development of crow’s feet.
What Are Crow’s Feet? Defined by a series of horizontal lines, crow’s feet extend from the outer corners of the eyes. Also known as laugh lines, they can run down the cheeks and can give the skin a crepe-like look. Crow’s feet are a result of everyday facial movements like smiling, laughing, and squinting. One of the first signs of aging, crow’s feet can start to develop as early as our 20’s.
Crow’s feet can be addressed in two ways: being proactive to protect yourself from getting new ones; and, getting rid of the lines that have already formed.
Be Proactive and Make Sure to Protect Your Skin
Botox® is one of the most effective ways to combat crow’s feet. Not only does Botox treat existing lines, but it can slow them from forming in the first place. Botox works by temporarily preventing the muscles around the eyes from contracting—thereby, Botox stops new lines from forming and present wrinkles to deepen even further. It is imperative to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays by applying a sunscreen with broad spectrum protection every morning. We understand the importance of skin protection and carry a number of professional grade skincare lines and sunscreens. For days spent outside, reapply your sunscreen every two hours or anytime following water exposure. As when applying any product to the eye area, avoid rubbing—instead, use the pad of your ring finger to gently pat your sunscreen all the way around your eye area.
Treat Existing Crow’s Feet
Once crow’s feet appear, there are a number of treatment options available to you at our Kirkland practice. A new favorite at Northwest Face & Body is ThermiSmooth®. ThermiSmooth safely heats the underlying layers of the skin to stimulate our body’s natural production of collagen. New collagen formation lessens wrinkles and smooths the appearance of crow’s feet. A welcome bonus, ThermiSmooth also firms and tightens the skin around the eye to give you a more youthful look. Crow’s feet can also be treated with laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels, and Pellevé®.
